According to Screamin Jay Hawkins this song was supposed to be recorded as a bluesy love song but someone got all the performers drunk during the recording. The result was the totally off-the-handle performance you hear above. Whoever the person responsible was, lets all take a moment to thank them. I Put A Spell on You is by far one of the weirdest recordings to come out of this time period, particularly if you wind up with one of the recordings full of spooky laughter and grunting snorts. Even without those, Hawkins’ voice is deep and full and menacing in its own right. It’s the perfect villain voice, the one every Disney villain has tried to emulate in some way.
